retra support calls for internet tax
Published:  09 December, 2011

Retailer association retra has backed calls for an internet tax to create a level playing field between bricks and mortar and online retailers.

Bryan Lovewell, retra’s chief executive, said the issue of a possible internet tax was discussed in-depth at a recent retra management meeting.

In the United States, ten senators have joined forces to push a bill that will allow state authorities to collect internet sales taxes from out-of-state retailers.

Mr Lovewell said: “The internet has had a massive impact on the retail landscape, however, the cut-priced nature of some internet players, has had a detrimental effect on UK high streets. At retra, we support a move in the UK to create a level playing field, and to recognise the investments made by independent retailers in staff training and well designed showrooms.

“An internet tax is long overdue,” argued Mr Lovewell.
