  • Shades of green
    Published:  02 May, 2008

HAVING recently learnt that AVF Group has become the world's first mount manufacturer to go carbon neutral, as the company has offset its carbon emissions by a number of projects producing 'clean energy' from renewable sources, I was impressed with the simplicity of this idea. Substantially reducing carbon emissions will be very difficult for most electrical companies since many of them have moved their manufacturing to the Far East and transportation of even the most energy efficient products is likely to offset their energy saving benefits. Since it is difficult to cure the causes we should at least deal with the symptoms.

It was inspired by the results of the company's pan-European research showing that people are spending more time socializing in their homes, while cooking is becoming a status skill and the kitchen a domestic theatre. Meanwhile their 'time budget' is shrinking while the ambition levels are rising.

  • Why new means better
Customers looking to replace their domestic appliance often are not aware of the tremendous progress made in product development since they have purchased the same type of appliance last time. It is up to retailers to point out why it is worthwhile to change that ailing washing machine or dishwasher for a state-of-the-art appliance. Jean Walton considers all the factors.
    Published:  02 May, 2008

The domestic appliance market in the UK is a mature one, with most sales being made as a result of replacement purchases. Although those working in the industry would like to think otherwise, the sector does not hold popular consumer interest in the way that cars, motorbikes and even consumer electronics products do, which is supported by regular readership of specialist magazines. The popularity of home improvements and related TV programmes has helped to raise interest in the performance of major appliances, but we have yet to see 'What vacuum cleaner' or a similar title at news stands.
