Dear Ms Ryland,

I was devastated when Olympic Electronics, my local electrical shop and a family-run business, closed last year owing to unsustainable rent/rate levels in the borough of Kensington & Chelsea.

I bought TVs, VCRs, microwaves, kettles, radios, desk fans and all sorts of small items like batteries, bulbs, cooker hood accessories etc from them. They had a workshop at the back of the shop, and actually understood the products they sold. They would order anything for you if you waned something that they didn't normally stock, and even deliver it after work. The owner, Basil, used to say he didn't sell anything he couldn't fix.

Are there any shops like it left in London? If you know of any, please spill the beans. There used to be a shop on the Chiswick High Road called Chiswick Electric, but they seem to have closed too. I'm afraid Dixons and the like just don't cut the mustard.

Hope you can help,

Kate Kent
